August Drink of the Month: the Cuba Libre

It should be obvious at this point that I prefer to recommend extremely simple cocktails for my drinks of the month. I promise it’s not due to laziness, but more due to the fact that I really believe that simplicity is one of the staples of a gentleman.

That being said this is probably the easiest and most common drink I will ever suggest. I would wager that most of you have had this dozens if not hundreds of times without knowing it’s actual name. The Cuba Libre is, in fact, a rum and coke.

This recommendation for August really comes for two reasons. First, I’m going to Cuba this month so I thought it would be fun to recommend a drink along that theme. Second, for all of you teachers and college students out there, this is your last month of freedom before the school year starts.

Cuba Libre literally means “Free Cuba.” The cocktail originated in the early 20th century when Cuba won its independence from Spain. So, you should drink it while celebrating the remainder of your freedom and independence this month before summer ends and real life hits you once again.

Ingredients:

-Rum
-Coke
-Lime juice (if you feel like classing it up a bit)
-Lime wedge for garnish

Who am I to recommend the percentage of rum vs coke in this mixture. Find your ratio and enjoy responsibly!
