Normally at Influential Gentleman we like to keep our cocktails simple…sometimes excruciatingly so. I promise it’s for simplicity’s sake and not because I am lazy. I just think it’s asking a bit much to prescribe a bunch of complicated ingredients that rack up your cost at the liquor store. Instead, I like to use ingredients that you may already have in your arsenal.
That being said, this drink will be an exception. The reason that it is an exception is because I had a drink the other weekend that kind of blew my mind a little bit. I’ve been having probably too many fancy cocktails recently but this one was by far my favorite one in a long time. So, I checked out the ingredients and made a few adjustments in some areas where I saw potential improvement.
The result: the Gentleman’s Autumn Old Fashioned.
If you’re a fan of Old Fashioned cocktails then this is a no brainer for you. However, even if you’re not a fan, I highly recommend trying this one out. The ingredients in this one balance extremely well and not only make the drink a little less harsh, but provide a fun experience. Close your eyes and this taste profile will bring you to a quiet front porch overlooking fall foliage in your most comfortable sweater. Or something like that.
Alright I’ve rambled on long enough and need to get to the point. Here is how you make this drink a reality…
Your favorite bourbon
Pay attention here because the directions are a bit more precise than usual. Start with your orange slice and give it a twist to release some of the juice and oils into the glass. Next place your sugar cube into the glass as well, and apply the apple bitters directly to the cube. This saturates the cube with the bitters, a classy touch. Put your luxardo cherry (not some common cherry) into the glass as well, and go to town with a muddler (or spoon), crushing the cube and cherry.
If you have a giant ball of ice at your disposal, use that. If not, put two large cubes in at this point. Follow that with 2 1/2 to 3 oz of bourbon, 1/4 ounce of allspice dram, and 1 teaspoon of demerara simple syrup.
Throw your orange slice on that and voila! You’ve created a delicious end-of-fall, Influential Gentleman approved, fancy cocktail.
As always, drink responsibly and enjoy!
